Next year’s May bank holiday is moving!

What’s changing?

The May bank holiday in 2020 is moving in England, Wales and Northern Ireland from Monday 4th May to Friday 8th May.

Why?

The bank holiday is moving to coincide with the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) marks the days towards the end of World War Two when fighting against Nazi Germany came to an end. The day has moved to the Friday to form part of a three-day weekend of commemorative events.

How will this affect my business?

For full time employees who work regular hours Monday to Friday this change shouldn’t have an impact other than making sure that they are aware of the change.

However, for employees who work part time, irregular hours or condensed hours there may be an impact on the calculation of their bank holidays.

What can I do?

Ensure that all employees are aware of this change by communicating it to them as early as possible.

Looking at the bank holiday calculations for affected employees and ensuring that they are aware of their entitlement.
